Softball gets first win over Mercer Vikings

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Playing all DI and DII competition in their spring trip at the Snowbird Classic since last Friday, the Herkimer Generals softball team managed their first win of the season Monday (3/16), defeating Mercer County Community College 7-5.

Herkimer (1-4) had allowed an average of 12 runs per game in their first three contests, righting the ship against both Delaware Technical and Mercer County with Shania McEvoy (Middleville, NY) and Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY) on the mound. Both freshman held their opponent to single digit run totals, losing two games by a total of three runs Monday.

Earning the first win of the season as a starter was Nicoletti, against the Vikings, throwing a complete game to earn the victory.

Supplying the offensive fire power in Herkimer’s third game of the day was Alexis Capasso (Gloversville, NY), Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY) and Kayla Bancroft (Fort Ann, NY). Both Capasso and Daniel both had two RBI. As for Bancroft, the sophomore added one run batted in on 2-for-4 at the plate.

One other standout on Monday was Karintha Myslivecek (Redfield, NY). The sophomore went 5-for-7 with one RBI. Other Generals with one RBI were Brittany Ormond (New Paltz, NY) and Jadyn Costello (Kingston, NY).

Herkimer will face their first DIII competition on Tuesday (3/17), taking on Rochester Technical Community College and Brookdale Community College. The Yellowjackets are 3-6 and the Jersey Blues are 3-2. The Generals will look to continue their winning ways with games at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.
