Offense sputters against Golden Eagles in loss

ROCHESTER, MN – After a couple special moments in the opening round of the 2015 NJCAA DIII National Championship Tournament, the Herkimer Generals softball team’s luck faded, losing to Rock Valley 2-1 in seven innings on Friday (5/15) at McQuillan Sports Complex.

Herkimer (37-8) was held to four hits in the game after tallying nine hits against Itasca and 10 against Hudson Valley. One of those came in the sixth, off of Brittany Ormond’s (New Paltz, NY) bat to right field, scoring Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY) for the first run of the game (1-0). Ormond finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate, accumulating five RBI in her last five games.

Unfortunately for Ormond, her RBI was the team’s only offense in the game, getting the start in the Generals third game of the national tournament. The sophomore had only allowed two earned runs in her last 12 2/3 innings, giving up two more against the Golden Eagles, all coming in the last two innings for Ormond’s third loss this season (9-3).

With the loss, the #2 Generals will again face off against #6 Hudson Valley. Herkimer has beaten the Vikings three times already this season. The winner of this conference rivalry will play Rock Valley, needing to beat the Golden Eagles twice to be national champs. Game time between Herkimer and Hudson Valley is schedule for 1 p.m. on Field #5.
