Softball sweeps home opener against Twins

(Jacqueline Gardner hit the only home run in game two, a two run shot which scored Molly McGuire).

(Casey Boltersdorf only allowed two runs off of two hits in her start against the Twins at home on Thursday).

HERKIMER, NY – A slew of postponements, four since the first week of April, didn’t stop the #2 Herkimer Generals softball team from taking both games of their home opener on Thursday (4/14), defeating Columbia-Greene 15-0 and 10-2.

Herkimer (15-4, 5-0) looked like they were in mid-season form in game one, scoring four or more runs in every inning but one, watching both Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY) and Molly McGuire (Solvay, NY) go perfect at the plate. Each went 4-for-4 in game one, Daniels drove in three while McGuire drove in five. Helping McGuire to a game-high five runs batted in was her fourth home run of the season. As for Daniels, she had a game-high two doubles.

Just as dominant on the mound was Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY). The starter got her sixth (6-0) win of the season and third shutout, striking out 10 Twins through five innings for the complete game.

In game two, the offense had four less hits, but still managed to score 10 runs – amassing 10 or more for the seventh time this season. Helping the cause was McGuire, Elyssa LeBaron (Corning, NY) and Jacqueline Gardner (Syracuse, NY). McGuire drove in four more runs, finishing 7-for-7 at the plate in both games. LeBaron drove in one run, but was also perfect at the plate (3-for-3), coming one hit shy of a cycle – needing a home run for that to occur. Gardner got the home run LeBaron would’ve been looking for in another at-bat, driving in two runs when she hit a line drive over the left field fence for her first home run as a General.

Pitching in game two was Casey Boltersdorf (Levittown, PA). The freshman only allowed two runs in the game off of two hits, winning her second straight start in the process.

Herkimer will host another doubleheader on Saturday (4/16). Coming to play them will be Tompkins Cortland Community College. The Panthers are 9-6 overall and winners of their last three. Game times Saturday are 2 and 4 p.m.
