#2 Softball splits with #7 Corning Thursday on the road

CORNING, NY – After numerous rainouts to begin the week - the #2 Herkimer Generals softball program finally got back to action on Thursday (5/5), traveling to play #7 Corning - splitting with the Red Barons, winning game one 9-0, but losing game two 8-4 which snapped the team’s 21-game win streak.

Herkimer (32-5, 11-0) relied heavily on sophomore Dana Nicoletti (Syracuse, NY) in game one in the team’s first doubleheader against a ranked opponent this season. The right hander only allowed two hits in five innings pitched, then also drove in four runs at the plate, finishing the game one with her 13th win while going 1-for-2 at the plate.

Helping Nicoletti shorten game one to five innings was Hannah Desino (Pittsford, NY), Lindsey Parese (Herkimer, NY) and Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, NY). Desino and Parese both drove in two runs against the Red Barons, watching Parese hit two doubles to Desino’s one against Corning starter Kairra Burrel. As for Daniels, she finished the game one 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Game two saw the Generals play more than five innings for the first time in nine games, allowing the most runs against them since playing Richard Bland in March, watching Corning collect 13 hits against both Casey Boltersdorf (Levittown, PA) and Jacqueline Gardner (Syracuse, NY). Boltersdorf got the start, allowing six runs in four innings, while Gardner allowed two runs in three innings of relief.

As for the offense, they mustered seven hits against Red Barons’ Samantha Menning, going 16 game previously with double digit hit totals against opponents. Daniels led the way with two RBI, followed by Sydney Cimini (Syracuse, NY) and Parese with one.

Herkimer will look to start up another streak against Hudson Valley on Friday (5/6). The Generals will travel to play a Vikings team which is 10-8. Game times for the doubleheader a 2 and 4 p.m.
