Generals Defeat Hawks In Straight Sets

(Captain Shelby Bobzien ends the third set with an ace, helping defeat Mohawk Valley 3-0 on Wednesday).

HERKIMER, NY – In their first conference match of the season, the Herkimer Generals women’s volleyball team took care of business, defeating Mohawk Valley Community College in straight sets 3-0 (29-27, 25-14, 25-21).

Herkimer (1-3, 1-0) got off to a rocky start in the first set, trailing the Hawks throughout until a Shahadah Williams (Syracuse, NY) block and kill tied it at 23 apiece. Williams finished the match with five kills, one ace, eight digs, four assists and six blocks. After a timeout by Mohawk Valley, an ace by Carolyn Thompson (Hannibal, NY) and kill by Laurice Budd (Liberty, NY) kept it locked at 25. Both teams exchanged blows until a couple errors by the Hawks gave Herkimer the first set 29-27.

In the second set, Herkimer built a 21-8 lead before Mohawk got into double digits. Shelby Bobzien (Endicott, NY) started the Generals off fast with two quick service points, followed by five service points by sophomore Nickee Thibault (Ilion, NY). Sandwiched in-between that was a couple aces by Edwards and kills by Bobzien, Edwards and Williams culminating in a 25-14 second set for Herkimer.

The third set was back-and-forth until and ace, block and kill by Williams gave Herkimer a six point advantage (17-11). Mohawk Valley managed to get within one point of a tie (18-17), but a couple aces by Edwards and Bobzien capped off an excellent match between both conference rivals, ending with Herkimer on top in the third set 25-21.

The Generals next match is this Saturday (9/13). Herkimer will travel to Mohawk Valley Community College to play in their POD. The Generals will face Erie, Jamestown and Niagara.
