Generals sweep Twins in final match

(The women's volleyball team defeated Columbia-Greene Wednesday evening 3-0).

HERKIMER, NY – In their final regular season home match with a chance to end the season on a two-game win streak, the Herkimer Generals women’s volleyball team did just that, defeating Columbia-Greene Community College Wednesday evening 3-0.

Herkimer (4-24, 2-7) had solid performances from their starting five, winning each set by at least nine (25-5, 25-11 and 25-16). Setting the tone early was JaNay Mucitelli (Utica, NY). The freshman managed to collect five early service points thanks to two aces, causing the Twins to call a time out with the Generals up 11-3. After that, a Nickee Thibault (Ilion, NY) kill, Carolyn Thompson (Hannibal, NY) kill and Laurice Budd (Liberty, NY) block increased the lead to 13 (18-5). Pouring on the offense was Budd and Captain Shelby Bobzien (Endicott, NY) with a kill and ace, taking the first set 25-5.

The second set saw Herkimer jump out to an 11-5 lead, breaking a 2-2 tie thanks to a 9-3 run which included three kills by Thompson and an ace, kill and block by Mucitelli. Helping the Generals cap off a 25-11 second set was Shahadah Williams (Syracuse, NY). The sophomore ended it with two consecutive aces.

In the final set, the Twins came out with more energy, causing four ties. Breaking that momentum was Williams, Thibault and Budd. Williams had two kills and Thibault and Budd both had one, helping the Generals to a 14-7 lead. From there, two kills by Bobzien, Thompson and Williams built a 22-14 lead. Herkimer ended it, winning 25-16, getting their first win streak of the season.
