Volleyball falls to Hawks on the road

(Herkimer's Morgan Catania gets the dig and kill against the Hawks Wednesday evening).

UTICA, NY – Facing their second conference opponent this season on Wednesday (9/9), this time at Mohawk Valley Community College, the Herkimer Generals women’s volleyball team lost to the Hawks 3-0.

Herkimer (0-4, 0-1) only led briefly in the first and third sets. Kills by Mackenzie Holbert (Sauquoit, NY) and Laurice Budd (Liberty, NY) gave the Generals an early 3-2 lead in the first set, but Mohawk Valley took the next five straight points to push it too 7-3. Herkimer got within two points of a tie three times (12-10, 21-19, 23-21) thanks to a Brittany Purcell (McGraw, NY) ace, Budd kill and Morgan Catania (Johnstown, NY) kill, but the Hawks won the first set 25-21.

Similar to the first set, the Generals lead 3-2, 5-4 and 7-5, but an 8-0 run by the Hawks pushed it to 13-7. The closest it got from there was 14-10, but Herkimer only yielded five more points in the set, losing the third set 25-15, the same exact final for the second set.

Up next for the volleyball team is their first POD of the season, at Jamestown Community College. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Herkimer will face Erie, Niagara and Jamestown.
