Volleyball wins first match in five sets at home

(Lindsay Therrien and JaNay Mucitelli combine for the block at home on Wednesday in the varsity gym).

HERKIMER, NY – Coming back from two sets down on Wednesday (9/16) at home, the Herkimer Generals women’s volleyball managed to take the final two sets of a five set match against North Country to get their first win of the season 3-2.

Herkimer (1-7, 1-1) took the first set after the eighth tie (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 15-15, 16-16, 20-20, 21-21, 22-22) was broken by Mackenzie Holbert (Sauquoit, NY), Mary Rose Creedon (Little Falls, NY) and JaNay Mucitelli. Each had a kill, taking the 1-0 lead into the second set. Holbert led the team with 12 kills in the match, followed by Mucitelli with seven and Creedon with five.

Inconsistency in the second and third sets allowed the Saints to overtake the momentum from the Generals, leading 2-1 after three. North Country came close to taking the match in the fourth set, but a carry with the Saints up 24-23 tied it at 24-24, allowing kills by Holbert and Creedon to tie the match at two apiece (26-24) after seven lead changes to force a fifth set.

In the deciding set North Country took a quick 6-4 lead, but an ace by Holbert, block by Laurice Budd (Liberty, NY) and kill by Mucitelli tied it at 7-7, 9-9 and 10-10; ending the match on a 5-2 run to win. Hilary Hoda (Osaka, Japan) had the game winner, taking the last set 15-12.

The Generals will be back in action on Saturday (9/19), hosting a POD in the varsity gym. Herkimer is slated to compete against Broome Community College, Tompkins-Cortland Community College and Corning Community College. Play is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
