Hawks unable to handle Herkimer attack

(Herkimer's Ashley Mettler finishes off a set with a kill against the Hawks).

UTICA, NY – Led by a front court of Kayla Barber (South Glens Falls, NY), Ashley Mettler (Oppenheim, NY) and Paola Vazquez-Mora(Troy, NY), Herkimer traveled to Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) and handed the Hawks a decisive loss in straight sets Wednesday night (25-3, 25-7, 25-13).

The Lady Generals (3-2) jumped out to an early 9-1 lead in the first set, with Cristen Davis (Castorland, NY) amassing five service points before the Hawks had to call their first time out of the match.

Not fazed by the stoppage of play, Herkimer rattled off another four points (12-1) before MVCC scored, making it 13-2. The first set ended on another Herkimer 12-1 run, seeing Mettler end the set with one of her six kills.

The second set, like the first, had the Lady Generals startle the Hawks. After Zara Hyde (Bleecker, NY) accumulated 10 straight service points to give her team a 15-5 lead, Barber put her stamp on the set with numerous digs and blocks at the center of the net. After a Barber block, which put Herkimer ahead 23-7, Mettler finished off the second set like the first, with a kill her opponent couldn't handle.

MVCC brought some life to the match in the third set, getting within three (9-6) of Herkimer until a Katherine Clarke (Oneida, NY) block, Vazquez-Mora kill and Barber kill put the Lady Generals up by six (12-6).

Ending the third set, like the first and second, Mettler earned another kill and capped off a 13-5 run to give Herkimer the set and match.

Herkimer's next match is Saturday, September 14th. The Lady Generals will travel to Niagara Community College to play Erie, Jamestown and Niagara Community College in a POD. Match time is TBA.
