Herkimer sweeps in home opener

(Herkimer volleys for the 25-21 set win over SUNY Delhi Wednesday).

HERKIMER, NY – Building on their sweep over the weekend, the Herkimer Women's Volleyball team beat SUNY Delhi in straight sets (3-0) on Wednesday night, their first home game of the season in the varsity gym.

Herkimer (9-3) met up with the Broncos just 48 hours ago at a Fulton-Montgomery Community College POD. The result Sunday was 3-0, not much difference from tonight, which built on the Lady Generals current five match win streak.

It seemed like this match would be different, having SUNY Delhi jump out to a 4-2 lead in the first set, but a Kayla Barber (South Glens Falls, NY) block and kill eventually put Herkimer back up by one (5-4), and the team never looked back.

After Barber stepped up, so did  Zara Hyde (Bleecker, NY), Brynn Hlozansky (Johnstown, NY) and Ashley Mettler (Oppenheim, NY), each with kills, helping build the lead to two (14-12) before the Lady Generals ripped off a 4-1 run, causing the Broncos to call a time out. Katherine Clarke (Oneida, NY) got in the mix with a block, putting Herkimer up by three (21-8), then Barber ended the set with a kill (25-19).

Hlozansky stepped up the most for the Lady Generals in the second set, attaining three kills and a block against the Broncos in the matter of minute, giving Herkimer a commanding 20-8 lead. Finishing off the second set was Barber, this time with two kills to give her team another set 25-11.

In the third set, Herkimer jumped out to a 12-7 lead thanks to great front net defense by Clarke, who had two consecutive blocks, but SUNY Delhi came to life, going on a 10-3 run. Paola Vazquez-Mora (Troy, NY) tried to stop the bleeding with a kill, which put it at 13-10, but it took more than Vazquez-Mora to give Herkimer the eventual sweep. The last seven points were scored by three kills, one ace and one block. Hlozansky had a kill (19-18), Hyde had a kill (20-18), Clarke had a block (21-19), Davis had an ace (24-21) and Barber had a kill (25-21).

Another notable standout for the Lady Generals in the sweep was Nicole Thibault (Ilion, NY). Thibault had nine service points.

Herkimer will look to build on its 8-1 record in their last nine games this Saturday at a Mohawk Valley Community College POD. The Lady Generals will be going into the matches feeling good, taking 12 of their last 13 sets. Start time is slated for 8 a.m.
