Lady Generals take Mountain Valley Conference Tournament

COLUMBIA, NY – Getting a second chance, something athletes rarely receive, occurred on Saturday at Columbia-Greene Community College when the Herkimer Generals volleyball team took on SUNY Adirondack in the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament. A week earlier, the Timberwolves gave the Generals a 3-0 match loss at a Columbia-Green POD, this time Herkimer gave Adirondack the loss, winning 3-2, earning the team a Mountain Valley Conference Tournament upset.

Herkimer (23-10) had a match against Fulton-Montgomery Community College before taking on SUNY Adirondack. The Lady Generals handed the Raiders a 3-0 loss at their place a couple weeks ago, but that didn't faze Fulton-Montgomery, giving a good fight on the hardwood Saturday. Led by Kayla Barber (South Glens Falls), Cristen Davis (Castorland, NY), Brynn Hlozansky (Johnstown, NY), Zara Hyde (Bleecker, NY), Paola Vazquez-Mora (Troy, NY) and Ashley Mettler (Oppenheim, NY) Herkimer managed to take three of four close sets (26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21). Barber led the team with 18 kills and eight aces. Hlozansky and Mettler both tied for the lead in digs with 12. The lead in assists went to Hyde with 20, while Barber and Hlozansky tied with three blocks.

With the team warmed up, and ready, it took five sets (25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 25-12, 15-12) to figure out the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament winner. To date, Herkimer had never taken straight sets against the Timberwolves, seeing Adirondack beat them 3-1 and 3-0 in the regular season. On Saturday, the team turned the page on this match-up, winning the fourth and fifth set, after losing the second and third for the 3-2 win.

Herkimer's next match will occur this Saturday, November 2nd at the Region III Championship. The Generals have earned the #6 seed, which has them playing in the 'B' pool. Their first match will be against Jamestown Community College at 10 a.m. The team finished 1-1 against the Jayhawks in the regular season. The second match will be against SUNY Adirondack. The Lady Generals will look for the win again, evening up the series to 2-2.
