Sharon Howell will serve her fifth year with the cross country program in 2016, two as head coach in 2005 and 2006 and three as Associate Head Coach in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2014, Howell helped the program to its first individual national champion in over 18 years, then groomed another athlete into an All-American in 2015. 2014 was a female, and 2015 was a male.

Howell began as the head coach of the Generals Track & Field program in 1983. Her women's teams have captured five Regional Championships during her tenure (1982, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2010), finished as the national runner-up in 2001 and national champions in 2008 and 2010. Howell has produced over 20 individual National Champions as well as numerous All-Region and All-Americans.

A 1979 graduate of Herkimer College where she was a track & field All-American, Howell transferred on a volleyball and track scholarship to the University of Rhode Island where she set school records in the high jump and long jump.

As a coach, Howell was NJCAA Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2003 and Coach of the Meet in 2008 and 2010. Her Regional Coach of the Year honors occurred in 1982, 2001, 2008 and 2010.

An Associate Professor of Physical Education at Herkimer, Howell earned her Master's Degree from Cortland State in 1986. She resides in Ilion, NY with her husband Bill and their two daughters Amanda and Sharon.
