Coach Maxson is taking over a strong and competitive Herkimer track & field team after serving as an assistant coach under the well-respected coach Sharon Howell since 2014. While under the tutelage of Coach Howell, Maxson helped to lead the Generals to regional titles for the women twice (2016 & 2018) and 2nd place finishes for the women in 2019 and the men in 2016, 2018, and 2019. In this short time, Coach Maxson has also assisted with the development of 13 National Champions and 14 All Americans. Coach Maxson currently serves as the NJCAA Division III Track & Field Coaches Association President as well.
Maxson graduated from Bolivar Central School as a 3 sport athlete. He then ran cross country as well as track & field for Roberts Wesleyan College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education before continuing on to earn a master’s degree from SUNY Cortland. Maxson is currently employed as a middle school social studies teacher at Central Valley School where he has worked as an educator for over 20 years. During his time at Central Valley, Maxson has continued to share his passion for running by coaching the boys varsity cross country team for over 20 years. He has also coached boys varsity track & field at Ilion High School as well as girls junior varsity & varsity volleyball at Central Valley Academy before joining the coaching staff at Herkimer College in 2014.
Coach Maxson is a resident of Ilion, NY where he and his wife Rachael have two sons, Liam & Orin.
