Generals baseball wins three in their four game series with MVCC
Herkimer, NY-- In game one versus the Hawks the Generals had a strong start. In the first inning Herkimer took an early 3-0 lead over Mohawk Valley from a double by Brandon Hubbard (Rockville, MD) and a triple by Bobby Lazar (Fairfield, CT). In the fourth bases were loaded for freshman Jake Terrill (Bayport, NY) who had a basese clearing single to right field which extended Herkimer's lead, 8-1.
The Generals were able to finish it in six innings defeating the Hawks 11-1. In this game sophomore Greg Musk (Rotterdam Junction, NY) pitched all six innings allowing just one, three hits, and struck out 13 batters.
Game two of the series was a repeat score of the first. The Generals were able to finish the doubleheader winning game two, also 11-1. Herkimer started out with an early 1-0 lead after the first, scoring on an error. Mohawk Valley was able to tie it up in the top if the third scoring one, but the Generals regained the lead in their next at bats.
In the bottom of the third Christian Aybar (Pawtucket, RI) hit a one-run single which gave Herkimer the lead for good. Aybar produced again in the Generals' big sixth inning contributing with a one-run double to center field. Aybar then stole third and easily scored on Joe Fichera's (Mahopac, NY) single to left.
Hubbard drove in Fichera on a double down the left field line which gave Herkimer the 10-1 lead. With the game ending run standing at second Jake Terrill had to drive it through the infield. Terrill hit a fly ball which the Mohawk Valley right fielder mishandled allowing Hubbard to score the game ending run.
Utica, NY-- Sunday's doubleheader versus MVCC started much different than the day before. Mohawk Valley more comfortable on their home field was able to rally in the first two innings taking the early 6-0 lead scoring two in the first, and four in the second. Herkimer came crawling back as they slowly produced runs throughout the last four innings starting with a double to left field by Brandon Hubbard. Hubbard was then able to advance to third on a single from Jake Terrill.
Sophomore Leon Babcock (Bloomfield, CT) drove in Hubbard and advanced Terrill to third on a double over the Hawk's center fielder. Terrill scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Lazar which ended the two run rally in the fourth from Herkimer.
The Generals were able to hold the Hawks scoreless, and offensively scored one run in each inning, but it was too late as Herkimer fell 6-5. On the mound for the Generals was Ryan Flansburg (Queensbury, NY) who gave up five hits and six runs.
In the final game of the series Herkimer pitcher Chris Henry (Yorktown Heights, NY) shut out the Hawks avenging the his team as they won 14-0 in five innings. The Herkimer defense was strong going error-less behind Henry who only allowed one hit and struck out five. The Generals produced 13 hits which helped produce the second inning nine-run rally. The Generals rally torch began with singles from Justin Emond and Elviz Belen (Putnam valley, NY) who passed the torch to Lazar who hit a one-run double to left-center.
The Generals look to host Jefferson Tuesday May 2nd in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
