Baseball takes 3 out of 4 from Cayuga
Cortland and Herkimer, NY - The Herkimer Generals and Cayuga Spartans battled in a hotly contested 4 game series this past week with the Generals taking 3 out of 4 by sweeping the doubleheader on Cayuga's home field in Cortland on Tuesday by scores of 20-8 and 3-2. The series then moved to Herkimer on Thursday where the Generals took Game 1 by a score of 4-3 and the Spartans rallied for a 3-2 win in the nightcap. The results of the series raises Herkimer's record to 14-3 overall and 5-1 in the Region III Eastern Division.
In Thursday's Game 1, Herkimer scored all 4 of the runs in the first inning and then held on for the 4-3 win. The key blow was Brendyn Stillman's (Waverly, NY) 3-run home run which came after Dale Stanavich (Amsterdam, NY) and Matt Parkinson (Whitesboro, NY) led off the game with back to back hits. The first inning hit by Stanavich was part of a 3-4 day for him at the plate. That is all senior pitcher Benjamin Wager (Johnstown, NY) needed as he went the distance for the win, allowing only 3 hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 in 7 innings of work.
Game 2 on Thursday was a heartbreaker for the Generals as the Spartans rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 7th to earn the 3-2 win. Cole Miller (Elmhurst, NY) was the hard luck loser, as he was dominant over 6 innings as he took a no hitter into the 7th before Cayuga's comeback. Miller struck out 9 and walked only 1 in 6.1 innings of work. Stillman once again led the offense, reaching base 3 times with 1 hit and 2 base on balls.
Herkimer, ranked # 8 in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll, looks to rebound this Sunday as they will host the Jefferson CC Cannoneers in a doubleheader in Herkimer. Saturday's doubleheader scheduled for Watertown has been postponed due to bad field conditions. The games on Sunday at Herkimer are set to start at 10:00 AM.
