Herkimer sweep of FMCC sets up showdown with HVCC for Eastern Division and MVC Championships

Johnstown, NY - It was once again a dominant performance at the plate for the Herkimer Generals, as they traveled to Johnstown, NY on Sunday and swept the Fulton-Montgomery Raiders by scores of 14-3 and 26-3. The 40 run explosion improves Herkimer record to 25-3-1 overall with a perfect 11-0 mark in the Mountain Valley Conference and 16-1-1 in the Eastern Division of Region III. 

Game 1 saw the Generals put the Raiders away with an 8 spot of the third inning that put the game out of reach. Brian Forbes (Rocky Point, NY) continued his strong sophomore campaign, going 3-3, which included a home run, while knocking in 3 and scoring 3 runs. Vito Castronovo (Utica, NY) also staying hot at the plate, going 3-5 in the 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored from the leadoff spot. Matt Parkinson (Whitesboro, NY), Brandon Kruzinski (Schenectady, NY) and Minjae Hong (Seoul, South Korea) had 2 hits apiece to add to the Herkimer attack. Matt Gonzales (Scotia, NY) got the win on the mound for the Generals, striking out 9 and only giving up 2 hits in 4 innings of work. Cole Miller (Elmhurst, IL) struck out one in his one inning of relief work.

Frank Wayman (Horseheads, NY) was the hitting star of Game 2, going 4-5 with a home run and 6 RBI's. Wayman also scored 4 runs as Herkimer scored 10 in the second and 9 more in the 4th to put the game away early. Kruzinski went 5-6 with 5 runs scored from the leadoff spot while Castronovo followed up his 3-5 Game 1 performance with a 3-4 performance in Game 2. Chris Godlewski (New York Mills, NY) got the start for Herkimer and went 3 innings. giving up only one hit while striking out 4. Yanni Orfanidis (Bayside, NY) and Tyler McDonnell (Yorktown Heights, NY) each pitched an inning of relief for the Generals to close out Game 2 and the sweep.

This now sets up a huge 4 game series with the Hudson Valley Vikings on Tuesday and Thursday that will determine the Mountain Valley Conference Champion for 2019 as well as the # 1 seed for the Eastern Division of Region III in the upcoming Region III Baseball Playoffs. The first two games Tuesday will take place at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY with first pitch set for 4:00 PM. The next two games are scheduled for Herkimer's home field on Thursday with the doubleheader set to start at 2:00 PM.
