Generals take first two games of showdown with Hudson Valley

Troy, NY - In a showdown for the Mountain Valley Conference and the # 1 seed in the Eastern Division of Region III, the Herkimer Generals went on the road and swept the Hudson Valley Vikings by scores of 10-7 in Game 1 and 5-4 in 10 innings in Game 2 on Thursday evening at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY. The wins gives the Generals an overall record of 27-3-1 on the year, along with a 13-0-1 in conference play and a 18-1-1 mark in the Eastern Division standings. 

Game 1 was an offensive affair as both teams combined for 21 hits and 17 runs. Herkimer took control of the game in the 5th inning, scoring 6 runs, highlighted by Cedric Rose's (Pittsfield, MA) grand slam that gave the Generals the lead they would not relinquish. After the Vikings cut the Generals lead to 8-7 in the 6th inning, Herkimer tacked on 2 more runs in the top of the 7th for the insurance runs they needed to get the win. Brandon Kruzinski (Schenectady, NY) and Vito Castronovo (Utica, NY) continued their hot streaks at the plate, each getting 2 hits in the game. Ryan Lanaro (Schenectady.,NY) started the game for the Generals, going 4 and 1/3 innings and striking out 4. Dale Stanavich (Amsterdam, NY) came on in the 5th and held the Vikings at bay to get the save, going 2 and 2/3 innings and striking out 7 of the 8 outs he recorded. 

Game 2's extra inning affair was decided when Herkimer pushed a run across in the top of the 10th and held on for the one run win. With one out Ben Osborne (Westhampton Beach, NY) singled. Stanavich then pinch ran for Osborne, stole second, and then came home on an error on the Hudson Valley first baseman on a ball hit by Kruzinski. The Generals shot out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth before the Vikings came back with 3 of their own in the bottom of the 5th to even the score at 4, where it stayed until the 10th. Brian Forbes (Rocky Point, NY) went 3-4 in Game while Joe Novenche (Clifton Park, NY) tallied 2 hits and Matt Parkinson (Whitesboro, NY) had the big blow in Herkimer's 3 run second inning, hitting a 2 run double. Cole Miller (Elmhurst, IL) went the first 6 innings on the mound for Herkimer, striking out 7 before giving away to Tyler McDonnell, who went 4 hitless innings in relief to hold the Vikings down and earn the win.

Round 2 of this matchup now moves to Herkimer for a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, May 2. The Generals, ranked # 4 in the latest NJCAA National Poll, and the Vikings will have their first pitch of the twinbill at 2:00 PM.
