Baseball wins Mountain Valley Conference Title, clinches # 1 seed in East for Region III Playoffs
Herkimer, NY - The Herkimer Generals concluded their regular season with a 10-0 6 inning win over Fulton-Montgomery on Thursday afternoon in Herkimer. The second game between the Generals and Raiders was called due to darkness after 9 innings with the teams tied at 3. The Game 1 win clinched the Mountain Valley Conference title for Herkimer as they finished their conference slate at 15-0-2.
Herkimer used a 6 run 5th inning to break Game 1 open as Cam Collett (Saratoga, NY) went 2-2 with 2 RBI's and 4 runs scored. Minjae Hong (Seoul, South Korea) went 1-3 with 2 RBI and Brian Forbes (Rocky Point, NY) and Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, MA) each added 2 RBI's as well. Keegan Leffler (Saratoga Springs, NY) got the win on the mound, going 4 innings and striking out 5 while allowing only 2 hits. Yanni Orfanidis (Bayside, NY) and Doug Rando (Whitesboro, NY) each added a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.
The win and tie on Thursday gives Herkimer a final regular season record of 29-3-2 and they currently hold the #2 spot in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll. Their 20-1-2 record in the Eastern Division of Region III has clinched the # 1 seed in the East in the upcoming Region III Playoffs. The Generals will begin postseason play with a best of 3 series against the # 4 seeded Genesee Cougars, which will be played at Vets Memorial Park in Little Falls, NY this weekend. Game 1 will start at 12 Noon and Game 2 will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1. If the teams split and a Game 3 is necessary, it will be played Sunday with the time to be determined at Vets Park.
