Generals split doubleheader with Erie to open Region III Schedule
Little Falls, NY - When the Herkimer Generals and Erie Kats usually meet up at the Vets Memorial Park diamond in Little Falls, it's Mid-May and a Region III Championship is a stake. But this time, the two long-time rivals met up on Saturday as the Generals opened the Region III part of their schedule with a doubleheader split against the Kats, winning Game 1 by a score of 12-0 in 5 innings before dropping the nightcap, 5-4.
In Game 1, the Generals broke open a 2-0 game by scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the 5th to secure the 12-0 mercy rule win. Dakota Britt (Rockwell, TX) ended the game, blasting a 3-run walk-off home run to put the exclamation point on the huge Herkimer inning that ended the contest. Matthew Tobin (Newport, NY) had 2 hits and 2 RBI's in the game while Kyle Caccamise (Hopewell Junction, NY) scored 3 runs while adding 2 hits and 2 RBI's of his own.
Trey Princiotto (Horseheads, NY) got the shutout win for Herkimer, going 5 scoreless innings and scattering 5 hits while striking out 5 Erie batters.
Game 2 was a different story as Herkimer and Erie played one of their trademark classic games. After each team scored a run in the first, the game stayed tied until Erie pushed across 2 in the top of the 6th to take a 3-1 lead. The Generals battled back with a Yuzuki Okamura (Shiga, Japan) double that knocked in Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY) to make it 3-2. Frank Wayman (Horseheads, NY) followed with a massive blast over the centerfield bleachers to give the Generals a 4-3 lead.
But Erie rallied, as with 2 outs they manufactured a walk before Greg Hare hit a home run to give the Kats a 5-4 lead they never relinquished. Herkimer's Kyle Taborne (Vestal, NY), who pitched out of 2nd and 3rd, 1 out jam in the top of the 6th to keep the game at 3-1, took the tough loss. Fasolo and Wayman led the Generals offensive attack with 2 hits apiece.
Next up for the Generals is a trip to Canandaigua, NY on Tuesday, March 30th and a matchup with the Finger Lakes Lakers. This will be a rematch of the 2019 Region III Championship, won by the Generals in Little Falls that punched their ticket to Tennessee for the D3 World Series. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
