Generals sweep Lakers in rematch of 2019 Region III Championship

Canandaigua, NY - The last time the Herkimer Generals and Finger Lakes Lakers met on the baseball diamond, it was for the 2019 Region III Title in Little Falls, NY. This time, it was a regular season matchup on the Lakers home field, but the result was the same. The # 7 Nationally Ranked Generals traveled to Canandaigua and came home with a 12-3 and 4-2 sweep of Finger Lakes on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Generals wasted no time getting the offense going in Game 1, scoring 7 runs in the first 2 innings to cruise to the victory. Robert Conley (Utica, NY) did a lot of the damage with a 2 run single in the first inning and then followed that with a double with the bases loaded in the fourth that brought in 3 runs. Dakota Britt (Rockwell, Texas) had 2 hits and scored 3 times from the lead-off spot and Yuzuki Okamura (Shiga, Japan) had 3 RBI's in the game.

Kyle Taborne (Vestal, NY) came back strong from Saturday's loss vs Erie, going 4 innings, giving up only 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 5 FLCC batters to earn the win.

Game 2 was a much tighter affair, with the Lakers jumping out to a 2-0 lead going into the 5th inning. The Generals rallied for 4 runs in the top of the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish. After a Dom Fasolo (Whitesboro, NY) double knocked in David Breakell (Loudonville, NY) to tie the game at 2, Okamura came off the bench to deliver a huge pinch hit 2 run single that put Herkimer ahead for good.

Eddie Rogers (Little Falls, NY), who pitched the last inning to close out Game 1, once again came in for the 7th inning of Game 2 and earned the save. Brandon Breakell (Loudonville, NY) came on in relief to earn the win, going 2.1 innings and scattering 3 hits while striking out 4.

The Generals now look forward to a 4 game set with their rivals from down the road in Utica, the Mohawk Valley Hawks. Herkimer will host a twin-bill on Saturday, April 3rd at Vets Park in Little Falls at 1:00 PM before traveling to Murnane Field on Tuesday, April 6th to take on the Hawks in another doubleheader at 2:00 PM.
