Generals Baseball Finish Regular Season with Undefeated Regional Record for First Time in over 20 Years

UTICA – The Herkimer Baseball team concluded its 2022 regular season with two wins over Mohawk Valley Community College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Generals begin postseason play with a 32-5 overall record and a 23-0 regional record. It’s the first time the program finished the regular season with an undefeated record in regional play in over 20 years.

Game 1:

Herkimer 2, Mohawk Valley 1

How it Happened:

Freshmen Austin Barnao (Ticonderoga, NY)  and Jake Lombardi (Levittown, NY) combined to throw a one-hitter over six ⅓ innings. Lombardi picked up his third win while sophomore Ryan Packard (Oneonta, NY) recorded his first save of the season.

Sophomore infielders Trey Miller (Rocky Point, NY) and Kyle Caccaimise (Hopewell Junction, NY) recorded two hits apiece. Sophomore 3B Dakota Britt (Rockwall, TX) brought in the team’s lone RBI.

Fast Facts:

Kyle Caccamise has reached base safely in 29-of-35 games this year.

Britt’s Game 1 RBI was his 46th of the season; the seventh-most in Region III

Ryan Packard, who has the second-best ERA in NJCAA Div. III, lowered his ERA to 0.67.

Game 2:

Herkimer 8, Mohawk Valley 5

How it Happened:

Freshmen pitchers Derek Hotzler (Richmondville, NY) and Corey Casteline (Johnson City, NY) allowed five runs over four ⅓ innings. Herkimer trailed 5-3 before scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning to win  8-5. 

Sophomore Eddie Rogers (Little Falls, NY) recorded his first win after striking out two and allowing just one hit in 1 ⅔ inning. Freshman Luke Pusz recorded his second save of the year after retiring the side in the 7th inning.

Sophomores Trey Miller, 1B Sal Carricato (Farmingville, NY), and Jordan Lewis (Toronto, ON) combined to drive in six of the team’s eight runs. 

Fast Facts:

Trey Miller has eight multi-hit games this season; four of which came against Mohawk Valley CC.

With his Game 2 triple vs. Mohawk Valley, freshman OF Jovani Wiggs (Amsterdam, NY) recorded his third triple in his last four games.

The Generals are back in action Saturday 5/14 when they take on Onondaga CC for the Region III Sub-Regional Matchup. First pitch is set for 11am.
