Generals claim top spot with NATYCAA Cup
For the first time in the history of Herkimer College, the Herkimer Generals athletic program has won the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup, ranking Herkimer first in the nation among NJCAA non-scholarship programs. Herkimer also won third place in the NCAA Learfield Sports Directors Cup. Both programs recognize excellence in two-year colleges, based on athletic success in championship competition.
Herkimer has finished in the top five of the NATYCAA Cup since its inception 10 years ago. This was the first time Herkimer College took the top spot, ending a three-year stint by Gloucester County College (NJ). The Generals amassed 151 points to the Roadrunners’ 139.5, collecting one team national championship in men’s soccer, eight individual track & field national championships, four Region III team championships (men’s soccer, men’s basketball, baseball and softball) and 17 individual Region III championships in cross country, swimming & diving and track & field.
Herkimer's Athletic Director Donald Dutcher said, "I am extremely proud of our student athletes and coaches for winning this award. Our coaches put a lot into recruiting the right student athletes to play for the Generals. When the student athletes come to Herkimer they buy into our philosophy and our mission of the athletic department. This has been a goal of ours since I arrived as the athletic director in 2004. To be the best you have to surround yourself with the best and I feel we truly have that here at Herkimer starting with our coaches, student athletes, professors, administration and staff. It is a total institutional effort. Our students go above and beyond not only the walls of the classroom but they also get involved with the community and are truly getting a valued well-rounded education when they come to Herkimer. There is no better feeling to be the #1 Junior College Athletic Program in the country and if you chose to come to Herkimer College and be a part of our athletic program you will receive a once-in-a-lifetime chance to receive a great education, athletic/co-curricular experience, where everyone know your name at an affordable coast and the opportunities are endless.”
