Baseball wins final series at home against Vikings
(Tyler Phillips collects an RBI in game one, scoring Eric Downey).
(Christopher Burns III scores Taishi Terashima in game one against the Vikings).
HERKIMER, NY – In their final home game of the regular season, the Herkimer Generals baseball team knocked around Hudson Valley pitching to the tune of 21 total hits in two games – outscoring the Vikings 22-to-9 – winning 10-7 and 12-2.
Herkimer 31-7 (21-3) is now 22-2 in their last 24 games. Helping the team to those totals has been excellent starting pitching and hits with runners in scoring position. In game one Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY), Christopher Burns III (Endicott, NY) and John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) supplied the clutch hits. Boland had the big hit in the fourth inning, supplying two-runs via a home run, giving his team the lead back after falling down by two (4-2) in the top half of the inning. It was Boland’s third home run of the season, all coming in his last five games. Burns III also added two RBIs in the game on 2-for-3 at the plate, and Philips added one RBI on 1-for-4, outscoring the Vikings 8-to-7 in the final three innings.
In game two, behind a complete game five hitter against sophomore Ben Moxley (Oneonta, NY), the Generals 10-run ruled Hudson Valley behind big games by Burns III (Endicott, NY), Shinnosuke Takahashi (Chiba, Japan), Michael Fancher (Gloversville, NY) and Eric Downey (Colonie, NY). Burns had two RBIs on 2-for-3, Takahashi had three on 2-for-2, Fancher had one on 1-for-2 and Downey had four on 4-for-4 at the plate.
The Generals next game is Wednesday (5/7). They’ll travel to Jefferson Community College to play at Watertown Fairgrounds. Start times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
