Terashima gives Generals birth in Region III Final Four
(Mike DeCarlo won game won, throwing 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits).
(Mike Harrington was one of four pitchers to take the mound in game two, throwing six strong innings for the Generals).
HERKIMER, NY – Capturing their second walk off winner this season, this time in a Sub-Regional playoff game, the Herkimer Generals baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to defeat Finger Lakes Community College 10-9 in game two, mercy ruling the Lakers in game one 10-2 for a birth in the 2014 NJCAA DIII Regional Final Four.
Herkimer 35-9 (22-4) saw Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Aomori, Japan) in his second at-bat of the game double to centerfield, scoring both A.J. Fabrizio (Palm City, FL) and Eric Downey (Colonie, NY) for the win. Downey reached home plate just before the throw, diving over it simultaneously as it was headed for the catcher.
Before that, the team loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Matthew Lichtman (Smithtown, NY), Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) and Christopher Burns III (Endicott, NY). A wild pitch scored Lichtman and double by Fabrizio scored Philips and Burns III to make it 9-8 in favor of the Lakers.
After a pitching change, Downey’s infield hit got the Generals in good position with runners on first and second with two outs. From there, Terashima drove the second pitch of his at-bat for the walk off winner.
Earning the win in game two was Will Apps (Cicero, NY). The freshman didn’t allow a run in his one inning pitched, following starter Nick Burch (Salem, NY) who was knocked out of the second inning in favor of Michael Harrington (Glens Falls, NY) who threw six. It was Apps third win of the season.
Mike DeCarlo (Wynantskill, NY) pitched 6 2/3 innings in game one, allowing two runs on seven hits, mercy ruling Finger Lakes by the eighth inning after Brandon Martinez (River Edge, NJ) got his third hit, a home run in the sixth to make it 9-1 and Downey got his got his only hit of the game to score Carlos Almonte (10-2) (Brooklyn, NY). Martinez went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Downey went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
With the win, Herkimer now moves to the NJCAA DIII Region III Final Four. They were awarded the #3 overall seed. The Generals will face #1 Niagara County Community College. Both teams will play at Veterans Park in Little Falls, NY this year’s host field for the Region III Final Four.
Onondaga Community College was awarded the #1 overall seed. They’ll play the #4 seed Erie Community College Kats.
Both quarterfinals games will be played on Friday, May 16th. Niagara will play Herkimer in the first game at 3:30 p.m. Onondaga will play Erie in game two at 7 p.m.
