LITTLE FALLS, NY – Scoring double digit runs in their third consecutive game, this time in the quarterfinals of the Region III DIII Final Four, the Herkimer Generals baseball team defeated Niagara County Community College in seven innings Saturday, beating the Thunderwolves 13-5.
Herkimer 36-9 accumulated 19 hits against three different pitchers, scoring in every inning but the second and third, never trailing to the Thunderwolves in the game. Starting for the Generals was sophomore Michael DeCarlo (Wynantskill, NY). The Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year improved his record to 8-0, throwing 5 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs and five total on six hits.
DeCarlo’s defense got him out of a jam in the fifth, not allowing a run after loading the bases with only one out. Freshman Matthew Lichtman (Smithtown, NY) made a leaping grab from second base, then doubled off the runner at third not expecting him to make the play. Had Lichtman missed the ball, it would’ve given the Thunderwolves their first lead of the game. Niagara tied the game an inning before when DeCarlo had a two-run home run hit off him by Joe DeLuca (Syracuse, NY).
From there, the Generals offense outscored the Thunderwolves 9-to-3 in the final two innings. In the sixth a double by Lichtman and Christopher Burns III (Endicott, NY) scored Carlos Almonte (Brooklyn, NY), Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) and Lichtman making it 7-2. Lichtman finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs, Burns III finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Phillips finished 3-for-5 with one RBI – hitting the Generals only home run of the game in the first inning.
In the seventh, five singles and one double gave Herkimer six runs to increase the lead to eight (13-5). John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY), Brandon Martinez (River Edge, NJ), Eric Downey (Colonie, NY), and Burns III had the singles, while Shinnosuke Takahashi (Chiba, Japan) had the double. Downey’s single over the short stop scored Boland (8-5), an error by the second baseman on a hit by Lichtman scored Martinez and Downey (10-5), A.J. Fabrizio’s single to right field (Palm City, FL) scored Lichtman and Takahashi’s double scored Burns III and Fabrizio (13-5). Martinez finished 4-for-4 with one RBI, Downey finished 1-for-4 with one RBI, Takahashi finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Fabrizio finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
In the sixth, Will Apps (Cicero, NY) relieved DeCarlo after two errors and a walk loaded the bases in consecutive innings for Niagara. Apps got through the inning after three batters, only allowing two runs (7-5). In the seventh he only saw three batters, striking out the final two.
With the win, Herkimer moves on to the Region III Semifinals, which will be played tomorrow (5/17) at Veterans Memorial Park. The Generals will play the winner of #1 Onondaga Community College and #4 Erie Community College. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
