Complete game by Moxley gives Generals 9-1 win over Cyclones

TYLER, TEXAS – Building on their performance from Sunday, the Herkimer Generals pitching was outstanding for a second straight day Monday (5/26) at Mike Carter Field during the NJCAA DIII World Series, allowing only one earned run in seven innings against St. Cloud Technical & Community College, defeating the Cyclones 9-1.

Herkimer (39-10) got their best pitching performance of the World Series from sophomore Ben Moxley (Oneonta, NY). Moxley only allowed one earned run in seven innings pitched – enough for the complete game – and his fifth (5-1) win of the season. The starter did just the same a week ago against Onondaga Community College in the Region III Championship game, going seven strong innings, allowing three earn runs, giving his team another big game performance in just over a week. Moxley now has the third most wins on the team with an impressive 2.41 ERA.

Getting the big hits for the Generals on Memorial Day were two freshman, Matthew Lichtman (Smithtown, NY) and Brandon Martinez (River Edge, NY). Both players combined for five RBIs, helping the Generals score in every inning but two. Lichtman got his first RBI with the Generals up 3-0 in the second, singling home Carlos Almonte (Brooklyn, NY) who reached base on a wild throw. That same wild throw also scored Taishi Terashima (Hiranai, Aomori, Japan) who reached base earlier on a fielder’s choice. Terashima finished the game scoring two runs in the game on 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Lichtman got his final two RBIs after singling to left in the third to score Martinez and Terashima, giving Herkimer four runs in the third to blow it open.

Martinez got his RBIs on singles in both the third and fourth innings, scoring teammate John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY) twice and Eric Downey (Colonie, NY) once. Boland finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and Downey finished 1-for-3. In the third, Martinez’s shot to left-center scored Boland and Downey to make it 8-0 in favor of Herkimer. In the fourth, another single to left-center scored Boland to make it 9-0.

Getting one RBI in the game was Shinnosuke Takahashi (Chiba, Japan), Boland and Terashima. In the first inning, Takahashi’s single to left scored Christopher Burns III (Endicott, NY) to give Herkimer a 1-0 lead. Right after that, Boland doubled to deep-right center to score Takahashi making it 2-0. In the third, Terashima’s double to left-center scored Downey to make it 6-0.

With the win, Herkimer now plays Waubonsee Community College Tuesday (5/27). The Chiefs defeated Northern Essex Monday 4-1 to advance to game 12. The winner between the Generals and Chiefs will play Cumberland Community College in game 13 of the NJCAA DIII World Series. The loser will be eliminated. Game 12 between Herkimer and Waubonsee will be played at 4 p.m. CST. The winner will play Cumberland right after at 7 p.m. CST.
