Baseball sweeps first conference opponent Sunday

SCHENECTADY, NY – After splitting two games at home with Schenectady on Saturday (4/11), the Herkimer Generals baseball team took two games from the Royals on Sunday (4/12), on the road, 14-2 and 9-7.

Herkimer (11-3) got solid pitching performances from both Chad Sinko (Cohoes, NY) and Joe Nellis (Johnstown, NY) in the doubleheader. Sinko went five strong innings in game one, only allowing two runs from six total hits. It helped the sophomore to his second win of the season.

As for Nellis, he went 3 2/3 of an inning, and needed Jake Shortslef (Hannibal, NY) to come in for his first save of the season, but nonetheless, Nellis earned his second win of the season too. Shortslef pitched 2 1/3 innings, and didn’t allow a hit or a run for the Generals, striking out three batters.

Standing out offensively for Herkimer was Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY), Christian Malave (Milford, CT) and Thomas Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY). Phillips went 7-for-9 with three runs scored, one double and four RBI. Malave went 5-for-8 with two runs scored one double and four RBI. Carrigan went 4-for-8 with three runs scored, one double and four RBI.
