Smith powers baseball Generals to series win

Troy, NY – The four-game series began in Herkimer on Saturday and concluded in Troy on Sunday. The Generals won the first three games; the Vikings won the fourth. Dan Smith (Westmoreland) had a huge series. Smith batted .400, homered, doubled, drove in nine runs, walked four times and scored five times.

Freshman starter Ben Moxley (Oneonta) worked a complete game shutout in Game One, which Herkimer won 3-0. Moxley went seven innings and allowed four hits, one walk, and struck out 10 Viking batters. Herkimer got on the board in the second inning after Justin Stevener (New York Mills) sacrifice-bunted over two runners, both of whom led off the inning with walks. Brent Baker (Fonda) singled home two runs. Baker came around to score on a Hayden Caffey (Thrall, TX) single.

Herkimer bats were hot in Game Two as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Dan Smith's bases-loaded double scored three runs, and Brent Baker's two-RBI single gave Herkimer the early advantage. Sophomore Joe Kuzia (Seymour, CT) worked four innings, allowing four hits, three walks, three earned runs, with two strikeouts. Hudson Valley cleanup hitter John Craig hit a two-run home run that closed the score to 6-3 after three and a half innings. Herkimer's Smith answered in the bottom of the third with a three-run blast that extend the lead to 9-3. (See photo at bottom of page.) Baker drove in two more runs later to extend the lead, and the Generals finished the sweep at home with a 12-3 win. Brent Baker was two-for-four with four runs batted in, and Smith was two-for-three with six runs batted in, a home run, a double, and three runs scored in Game Two.

Baseball 4-7-2013 BrandonOverstreetHerkimer traveled to Hudson Valley to finish the series on Sunday. The Generals won Game Three 4-1 clinching the series. Herkimer scored three runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Ryan Watson (Whitesboro), Dan Smith, and Gerald Milanes-Iglesias (Dominican Republic). Hudson Valley got a run in the fifth inning of starter Nick Burch (Salem) who worked four and one-third innings, allowing that single run with five strikeouts, four hits, and two walks. Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL) came on to work the final two and two-thirds innings to earn his first save of the year.

Hudson Valley walked away with a 5-4 win in Game Four. Herkimer battled back from being down 2-0 and tied the game in the fourth inning with a Cody Newbigging (Listowel, Ontario) home run and an RBI-single by Brent Baker. The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-RBI single. Herkimer battled back in the top of the seventh inning and tied the game on a two-RBI single by Dan Smith. Hudson Valley loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. A curve ball in the dirt skipped away and allowed the winning run to score.

Next up for Herkimer is a four-game series with Clinton Community College that starts in Plattsburgh on Tuesday and ends in Herkimer on Thursday. Herkimer's record is now 3-9 on the season and 3-1 in Region 3.
