HERKIMER, NY – Needing only five runs in both games of Saturday’s (5/14) sub-regional playoff doubleheader, the #6 Herkimer Generals baseball team defeated Genesee CC 5-4 in game one and two at home to advance to the Region 3 Final Four.
Herkimer (32-9, 22-2) relied heavily on its pitching staff in game one, managing just six hits offensively against Genesee’s Tyler Liberty. Zak Shaw (Fort Hunter, NY) started in game one for the Generals, and battled in his seventh start of the season, working out of jams in every inning he pitched but two in order to earn his fourth win (4-1) of the season. Shaw stranded a runner in scoring position in every inning but the first, working out of lead off walks in the fifth and sixth innings to only allow three earned runs off of eight hits in six innings of work. Two consecutive singles in the seventh ended Shaw’s appearance, needing Sal Lovaglio (Dix Hills, NY) to pitch the final three innings for his first save of the season. Lovaglio allowed one run to score, settling in after allowing a double to his first batter. The sophomore finished with five strikeouts.
Helping get Shaw in line for the win in game one was John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY) and Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY). Novenche singled in the fifth to score Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, NY) and Greg Musk (Rotterdam, NY) which tied the game at 2-2. Then Dorrian singled home Novenche in the same inning to give Herkimer their first lead of the game 3-2. It became a two-run advantage in the same inning after a Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY) fly ball was misplayed, allowing Dorrian to score, making it 4-2.
Novenche went 2-for-4 in game one with two runs scored and two runs batted in. As for Dorrian, he went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two runs batted in, getting his second RBI in the seventh when he singled home Novenche again to lead the Cougars 5-3.
Starting on the mound in game two was Musk. The left hander didn’t have to work out of as many jams as Shaw, going eight strong innings before getting relieved by Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY) after he walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth. DeSarro went on to walk a run in with the bases loaded, making it interesting before striking out the final batter of the game to get his first save of the season. It helped Musk to his sixth win of the season.
Driving in runs in game two was Lanning, Christian Malave (Milford, CT) and Jack Jones (College Grove, TN). Each drove in a run in the first three innings, watching the Generals score their final two runs of the game on passed balls in the seventh inning. Scoring was Dorrian and Lanning.
With the sweep, the baseball team will play in the Final Four again, winning the Region 3 championship the past two years in a row. Herkimer will again host the three-day tournament at Veterans Memorial Park in Little Falls, NY. Seedings are expected to be given out Monday (5/16) with opening round games slated for Friday, May 20th.
