Malave collects six RBI, catapults Generals to Region 3 Championship

LITTLE FALLS, NY – Totaling 24 runs on Saturday (5/21) with 13 of them coming in game two against #3 Onondaga at Veterans Memorial Park, the #2 Herkimer Generals baseball team advanced to the Region 3 Championship on Sunday (5/22), defeating the Lazers 13-5 in seven inning.
Herkimer (34-10, 22-2) was held scoreless in one inning, amassing 11 hits throughout the contest. The first big hit came from Gage Lanning (Central Square, NY) in the first. The catcher doubled to score Joseph Foran (Fort Ann, NY) and Patrick Dorrian (Kingston, NY) who led the game off with a walk and single. It helped the Generals capture the first lead of the game 2-0. Lanning finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in.
In the second inning a Greg Musk (Rotterdam, NY) sacrifice fly scored Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, NY) after he tripled to start the inning, making it 3-1. Then one inning later it became a 6-1 lead after Christian Malave (Milford, CT) hit a three-run home run, his sixth of the season. Malave finished the game with a season-high six runs batted in, coming through for his team in three separate innings with runners in scoring position.
It pushed to an six-run (8-2) advantage in the fourth after Herkimer saw Jake Rouse (Milford, CT) knock in the team’s seventh run on a sacrifice with the bases loaded and Malave single in the next at-bat. Scoring on Rouse’s hit was Foran. John Novenche (Clifton Park, NY) crossed the plate on Malave’s hit.
Onondaga did manage to score four runs from the fourth through six, cutting the deficit to 8-5 until Malave collected his last two RBI’s in the sixth when he singled home Novenche and Dorrian with the bases loaded.
The game ended after Rouse singled in Lanning in the seventh, watching Herkimer score three runs all with two outs to shorten the game due to an eight-run rule (13-5).
Getting the win for the Generals was Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY). The right hander went six strong innings, allowing five earned runs off of six hits for his sixth win (6-0) of the season. Jon Sell (Burnt Hills, NY) threw the final inning, amassing two strike outs in his shortened performance.
Up next for the team is #1 Niagara County. They face the Thunderwolves on Sunday (5/22) at 12 p.m. and will have to beat them twice at Veterans Memorial Park if they want to win the Region 3 Championship a third year in a row. Niagara has yet to lose a game in the tournament.
