Burch throws one hitter against Royals

(Nicholas Burch allowed no runs, one hit and struck out seven Thursday).

(Carlos Almonte's sacrifice in the second inning scores Eric Downey to give the Generals a 3-0 lead on Thursday).

HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Generals Baseball team had another inconsistent doubleheader against a hosted opponent Thursday. Scoring 10 runs in the first game gave the team a 10-0 win over Schenectady County Community College, but the Royals took the second game in seven innings 10-3.

Herkimer 9-5 (1-1) had Nicholas Burch (Salem, NY) starting in game one. He set the tone for the Generals, retiring the first 12 batters he face, either striking out or grounding out Royals hitters. At one point through the third and fourth inning, Burch struck out five consecutive hitters. He finished the game allowing one hit in five innings, striking out seven and walking none.

With Schenectady unable to string together any hits due to the strong start from Burch, the Generals offense put together runs in every inning they played in. The first run of the game came on an A.J. Fabrizio (Palm City, FL) hit which was unable to be handled by the Schenectady shortstop. The error scored Tyler Phillips (Hancock, NY) who reached base earlier in the inning on a single.

The Generals scored five more runs in the bottom of the second inning on five hits which scored John Boland (Rhinebeck, NY), Eric Downey (Colonie, NY), Phillips, Burns III and Fabrizio. All reached on hits but Phillips who walked to get on base. The Generals lead after two 6-0.

Two more runs were added in the third when Burns III scored Carlos Almonte (Brooklyn, NY) and Phillips on a double, increasing the lead to 8-0.

The final two runs of the game came on a base hit and passed ball. A single by Boland scored Brandon Martinez (River Edge, NY), then Boland came around to score later on the passed ball, winning the game 10-0.

In game two, Kyle Garrison (Schenectady, NY) got the start. He had similar success like Burch early, until the Royals scored their first run of the doubleheader on a double in the third. From there, Garrison pitched well until the fifth inning, giving up a 3-1 lead on four hits - three of them his – going 4 1/3 and allowing four runs. Will Apps (Cicero, NY) came in relief with no outs in the inning, striking out two, but allowing a run to cross the plate on a single, giving the Royals a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.

The game went to seven innings, seeing Herkimer use Kohei Otsuka (Tokyo, Japan) and Seve Kowalski (Franklin Springs, NY) in relief appearances. Both players allowed five runs, increasing the deficit from 7-3 at the end of the sixth to 10-3 by the end of the seventh.

Herkimer got two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh with no outs - Almonte and Phillips – then added Fabrizio to load the bases with one out, but the team was unable to score any runs in the inning, losing 10-3.

The Generals next game is today (4/11). With Schenectady unable to play on their field, Herkimer will be the host site for a second consecutive double header. The Royals will be the home team, while the Generals will be the away team. Game times for Friday are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
