Generals win in first round of baseball regionals

Little Falls, NY – The Herkimer Generals came from behind with a six-run fifth inning to defeat Onondaga CC in first-round regional play. HCCC will meet Niagara CCC at 3:30 this afternoon to continue their quest for the Region III title and a berth in the national elite eight tournament in Texas. The regional tourney is being played at Vets Park in Little Falls.

Starting pitchers Michael DeCarlo of Herkimer and Ronn Bidwell of Onondaga held their opponents scoreless through four innings. OCC took the lead with a three-run top of the fifth inning.

Herkimer's bats came to life in the home half of the fifth, sending Generals across the plate six times. Herkimer added three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to gain an 11-3 victory.

Ryan Watson, Dan Smith, and Chris Burns each drove in a pair of runs for HCCC. Generals Brandon Overstreet, AJ Fabrizio and Burns each stroked two hits.

Herkimer will meet Niagara in the first winners' game at 3:30 today. Onondaga will meet Erie CC in the first losers' contest at noon. The winner of the noon game will play the loser of the Herkimer-Niagara game at 7:00 p.m. The Region III championship will be determined on Sunday.
