Generals defeated at regionals, end season 30-14

Little Falls, NY – The Herkimer Generals were defeated in extra innings by Niagara, and the Erie Kats broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning to also better the Generals. HCCC's strong season ended on Saturday evening with a 30-14 record and the Mountain Valley Conference crown.

Niagara 10 – Herkimer 5

Baseball 5 18 2013 AJFabriziooThe Thunder Wolves and the Generals played on even terms for 10 innings, but then a five-run 11th inning sealed the win for the visitors from Niagara CCC.

Herkimer took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the second inning. Dan Smith walked, Justin Stevener singled, and then Brett Baker's single to left drove in two runs.

Niagara, however, came back with two runs in the top of the third. The game continued in that manner, with the two teams keeping the score even. It was 5-5 after seven innings, and it stayed that way through the 10th. The Generals threatened in both the ninth and 10th, but Niagara double plays (second to short to first, and short to second to first) ended both Herkimer threats.

The Thunder Wolves opened the 11th with a perfect bunt down the third base line. Then they put down a bunt that was misplayed. Then a grounder got through the Generals' drawn-in infield. Three more singles put the game out of reach.

The loss relegated Herkimer to the losers' bracket and a twilight contest with Erie CC.

Erie 6 – Herkimer 3

Baseball 5 18 2013 HaydenCaffeyErie's Brent Barry was recently named the Region 3 Player of the Year, and on Saturday evening he showed that he was deserving of the honor. Barry pitched all nine innings, scattering six hits and striking out eight Herkimer batters. He also broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with a solo home run over the left field fence.

Six different Generals hit safely. Three Generals each drove in a run. But the evening belonged to Erie CC. The final score of 6-3 eliminated HCCC from the regional tourney and ended the Generals' season.

Niagara and Erie will now meet in the regional championship game at Vets Park at noon on Sunday.

The Generals' fine 30-14 season included an 11-game winning streak in April and a 10-game winning streak in May. It also included the Mountain Valley Conference Championship.
