Herkimer College Hosts 2018 Region III Men’s Basketball Final Four This Weekend
Herkimer, NY - Herkimer College will be hosting the 2018 Region III Men’s Basketball Final Four this Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4. The Herkimer Generals, the #2 seed and the highest remaining seed in the tournament, earned the right to host the tournament with a 97-77 victory over #7 Corning Community College in a Region III Quarterfinal on Tuesday, February 7. That result, coupled with the loss by #1 seeded Mohawk Valley, allowed Herkimer the chance to host this weekend’s Final Four. Herkimer won last year’s Region III championship and is looking for a fifth trip to the Division III National Tournament in six years.
The Generals (23-5) will play #3 Onondaga Community College (22-7) in Saturday’s first regional semifinal at 2:00 p.m. The Lazers come into the game fresh off of an 89-87 overtime victory over Finger Lakes Community College in their regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, February 7. Onondaga and Herkimer met once previously this season, with the Generals earning a 78-69 victory.
Saturday’s second semifinal pits the #4 seeded Cayuga Community College Spartans (20-7) against the #8 seeded Fulton-Montgomery Raiders (14-10) at 4:00 p.m. The Spartans, the Mid-State Conference regular season champions, held on for a 96-91 win over North Country in their Tuesday, February 7 quarterfinal matchup. The Raiders are coming off a 90-87 upset win over the top seeded Mohawk Valley Hawks on February 7 in Utica, NY. Fulton-Montgomery defeated Cayuga on February 3 by a score of 89-87 in Johnstown, NY in their only matchup this year.
Saturday’s semifinal winners will meet on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Region III championship game at Herkimer. The winner of that game will represent Region III in the 2018 NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament March 15-17 at Sullivan Community College in Loch Sheldrake, NY
