Generals to defend Region III Championship against Cougars

(Wendall Williams finds Jonathan Feiler for the dunk in the first half of Saturday's Region III Semifinal).

DELHI, NY – Timely shooting and superb defense allowed the Herkimer Generals to defeat Mohawk Valley Community College 66-65 in overtime at the Region III Men’s Basketball Semifinal Saturday afternoon, hosted by SUNY Delhi at Clark gymnasium.

Herkimer 24-7 (14-3) played the Hawks in the same exact game last year, yielding the same result, a Region III Championship game appearance, which is Herkimer’s third consecutive and seventh in the last 10 years.

The defense, which has worked hard on their 2-3 zone since the beginning of the season, went man-to-man in the final three minutes of regulation and all of overtime to decide this one. In doing so, the Generals only allowed seven points, never allowing Mohawk Valley to recapture the lead it relinquished with five minutes left in the first half after a Jason Foden (Dolgeville, NY) 16’ jump shot. Foden finished the game with four points, two rebounds and two assists.

With the defense doing their job, the offense relied on freshman guard Wendall Williams (Syracuse, NY) in overtime. Known more for being around the rim, Williams scored six of the Generals eight points in overtime from the perimeter, nailing a three-pointer with 3:52, field goal with 1:37 and free throw attempt with 3.5 left in overtime, never allowing Mohawk Valley a chance to end their season. Williams finished with 16 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

The Hawks did give Herkimer a fight however, erasing an 11-point first half deficit, eventually tying it at 51 with 6:52 and 58 with 8.1 left in regulation thanks to three-point field goals. The first tie was answered by Enson Garcia (Bronx, NY) - who finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds – hitting his own three-point field goal, scoring five straight points to give Herkimer a three-point lead (56-53) with five minutes left.

The Generals were unable to answer the second tie because the three-point field goal only yielded the team 3.5 second to make the game-winning shot after Mohawk Valley used their foul to give when the ball was inbounded with 8.1 left. An inbound pass from Garcia caromed off the backboard to Foden, who almost made a fade-away jumper as the clock expired, rimming out for extended basketball.

Mohawk Valley did have a couple possession lead in the first half, for 13 minutes, but Regional Player of the Year Jonathan Feiler (St. James, NY) never allowed it to get more than that, scoring 12 points in the first half, on his way to 19 points, eight rebounds and one block in the game. His signature play came with eight minutes left in the half, stealing it and throwing an up-court pass to Julio Galay (Bronx, NY) for the layup. It led his team to a 14-0 run to end the half, capped by a Feiler three-pointer, his third of the season, giving Herkimer a 36-25 lead at half.

Look for the month of March to be a nice change for the Generals. In February, the team lost three games in a row after an eight-game win streak, all by a total of eight points. Like the season is changing, it looks as if Herkimer is doing the same, heading into the Region III Championship game at Clark gym Sunday (3/2). The Generals will look to defend their 2013 Region III Championship against Clinton Community College, a team the Generals have beaten twice this season. It will be their first time meeting in the championship game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.

(The Generals defense comes through in overtime not allowing Mohawk Valley to hit the three, which would've tied it).
