Generals get past Pioneers to play in Philly final

mbball 01 12 2013 JeffersonHerkimer, NY – It wasn't their best outing or their prettiest game, but the Herkimer Generals got the win that they needed to get into the Philly Tournament title game. They got it by downing the Alfred State Pioneers 66-55 on Saturday evening.

The Generals did their early scoring from close in. Dequan Jefferson got the party started with a putback. Then the Generals passed to their big man, 6' 8" freshman Jonathan Feiler, for four of their next five field goals. Feiler used several quick and agile moves to get to the basket. After his fourth FG, the score was 12-10 Herkimer.

Jefferson added a dandy baseline move, making the score 14-10. All 14 points had been scored by Jefferson and Feiler.

Herkimer's first longer-range basket was the work of hustling Johnnie Davis. Davis went to the left side of the arc and drained a three. 17-12 Herkimer.

The Generals displayed a good work rate and slowly built a 13-point lead in the first half. After 20 minutes, the teams went into the break with the score 34-21.

It seemed as if the Herkimer Five would increase their lead in the second half, but that did not happen. Alfred State played with Pioneer spirit and started reducing the home team's lead. Herkimer added to the problem by going into a scoring cold spell in the middle of the second half.

The visitors closed the score to 57-51, then Demetrius Mitchell sank a free throw to make it 58-51 with 1:05 to play. Alfred State gave it everything they had in the final minute. They got as close as 58-53, but the Generals' end game was up to the task.

Jefferson sank four consecutive free throws, Feiler put two more nails in the coffin from the foul line, and Jefferson sealed the win with a controlled but emphatic two-hand dunk. The final score was 66-55.

The win puts the Generals in the championship game of the two-day Second Annual Philly Tournament. Their opponent will be ASA College, a Division-I team from Brooklyn. ASA romped over Division-III Northhampton 101-73 in the second game on Saturday night. Herkimer and ASA will meet for the tourney title at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. The consolation game between Northhampton and Alfred State will tip off at noon.
