Herkimer wins MV Game One

Herkimer – The always-scrappy Mohawk Valley Hawks visited the Herkimer hardwood Wednesday evening for the first game of this season's home-and-home pairing. The Generals prevailed before a nearly-full house, 79-70.

mbball 01 24 2013 FeilerFans from Utica, Herkimer, and elsewhere braved the frigid temperatures and flocked to the Herkimer arena to watch the big game. The Herkimer Five prevailed, and kept their #1 rating among Region III teams, but Hawks fans also saw a memorable effort as MV closed the scoring gap and fought to the end.

The contest tipped off with the two teams on even terms. Jonathan Feiler opened the scoring with a nice two, then MV sank a three, and Todd Hunt matched it with a three-pointer for the Generals.

MV tied the score at 5-5, and it stayed close for nearly 10 minutes. Demetrius Mitchell broke a 17-17 tie with a three. He would go on to tally five times from beyond the arc.

Mitchell forwarded a pass to Mike Thomas. Thomas stuffed it, and Herkimer led 22-17. Johnnie Davis scored with a strong baseline move. The Generals were expanding their lead.

The Hawks fought back, but Thomas scored again after taking an inbounds pass from Floyd and re-established a five-point lead. Thomas added two free throws with 5.5 seconds left in the period. Herkimer led 37-30 at halftime.

The Generals' attack was nicely balanced in the opening half. Feiler scored 11 points while Mitchell, Thomas, and Todd each contributed six.

Herkimer opened the second half with a strong offense. Feiler scored with a putback. Mitchell drove almost coast-to-coast for two. Mitchell then added a three, and the score was 44-30.

The Generals kept up the pressure at both ends of the court. They were scoring well, and they were thwarting the Hawks' offense.

mbball 01 24 2013 ThomasJerome Floyd got inside for a putback. Steve Whittingham added five quick points with a three-point play and a nice jumper. The score was 52-36 Herkimer.

The home side's lead swelled to 19 (57-38), and the Generals had a chance to put the game away, but they did not do it. The Hawks never let up, and they started closing the scoring gap.

Mohawk Valley outscored Herkimer for a while. Finally Mitchell hit another three, MV sank a three, and the game ended with Herkimer winning 79-70.

After the game, Head Coach Matt Lee was pleased with the win over Herkimer's archrivals but was disappointed with the team's play late in the game. "We gave up too many easy shots, and we lost some purpose on offense," Lee said of the final eight minutes. He added "Give MV credit. They worked very hard, and they let us know that they will be ready for the rematch in their building (Feb. 12)."

Herkimer's challenging week continues on Friday when the Generals play at Delhi. Their next home game will be on Sunday in a women's-men's doubleheader with Corning. Game times are 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
