Delhi downs Generals 65-58

Delhi, NY – Intense play by SUNY Delhi and below-par shooting by the Generals combined to give the Broncos a 65-58 victory on Friday evening.

The teams entered the contest with Herkimer ranked #1 and Delhi ranked #2 in the region. The two had battled on the Herkimer hardwood on Dec. 6, with Herkimer winning 55-33. This time, however, the Broncos would not be tamed.

Delhi began the contest well, but the Generals had trouble scoring. The Broncos soon led by nine points. Some good play by Herkimer's guards helped get the visiting Generals back into the game. At halftime, Delhi led 30-28.

The second half also began with the hosts outscoring the visitors. They built a 53-44 lead early in the half and still led by eight with 3:30 to play.

A free throw by Jerome Floyd and some steals and forced turnovers allowed the Generals to close to within a point with 2:30 to play. Herkimer, however, could not cash in on some opportunities from the floor and from the line. The Broncos upped their lead at the end and earned the 65-58 victory.

There is a lot of basketball to be played before the regionals, but it is possible that these same two teams could meet one more time in the postseason. Meanwhile, the Generals return to the Herkimer hilltop to host Corning on Sunday afternoon. The tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Herkimer scoring: Davis 8, Floyd 7, Whittingham 7, Mitchell 7, Hunt 5, Jefferson 10, Thomas 2, Feiler 12 – Total 58
