Second-half surge carries Generals past Spartans 70-60

Auburn, NY – The scrappy Spartans of Cayuga CC kept the Generals in check for 20 minutes and owned a 29-23 lead at the half on Saturday afternoon. Herkimer, however, made the needed adjustments and played a very different second half. The Generals outplayed the home team and earned a 70-60 victory.

But Cayuga started scoring, and the Generals were finding it hard to get the ball into the hoop. The home side tied the game at 9-9 then moved ahead. The Spartans also played very tough and tight defense.

The half became a low-scoring affair. With 6:20 left in the opening stanza, Floyd drove through the lane and tied the game 18-18.

The home team kept the pressure on the Generals, who were having trouble with all aspects of their offense. The Spartans sank some shots and built a 29-19 lead. Jon Feiler hit for two, and Steve Whittingham fed Feiler for two more. The half ended 29-23, Cayuga.

Teams can sometimes regroup and change their ways during halftime. The Herkimer Five did just that.

Mike Thomas opened the second half by hitting for three from the right corner. Feiler put back a rebound. The Generals trailed by only a point and were looking like themselves again.

The teams traded baskets. The score was 31-30, Cayuga. Demetrius Mitchell fed a perfect bounce pass to Dequan Jefferson, who soared and used two hands to slam the ball through the rim and give Herkimer the lead. That play seemed to further ignite the Herkimer attack.

Jefferson got the next basket after taking a nice inbounds pass from Floyd. Floyd then hit a three-pointer. Mitchell sank a three from the right corner, and on the next play he scored a three from the left corner. Herkimer led 45-35. Jefferson scored a two and then a three. Herkimer led 50-42.

Whittingham scored a three and then a long two. Herkimer led by 12 with 9:08 left to play.

Cayuga scored a three with 2:10 to play. Mitchell got the ball and sprinted up the court with Jefferson in a two-on-one. Mitchell fed Jefferson, and the senior from Utica scored. Jefferson followed that play with a power layup. 69-60.

The Generals were managing the time remaining when Jefferson was fouled. He drained a free throw for the final point of the contest. Herkimer won 70-60. The team had scored only 23 points in the first half, but Jefferson himself tallied 20 points in the second 20 minutes.

Herkimer now sports a 19-3 overall season record. Their next game will be on Tuesday when they host the Twins of Columbia-Greene CC at 6:00 p.m.
