Generals capture conference crown on Senior Night

Herkimer, NY – The visiting Hudson Valley Vikings gave the Generals a very good game on Wednesday night, but the Herkimer Five scored when they had to and earned a 63-55 victory. The Senior Night win gives the Generals a 26-3 season record and strengthens the argument for the Green & Gold to receive the #1 seed in postseason play.

The victory also clinched the Mountain Valley Conference championship. This is the Generals' third MVC championship in the past four seasons.

A large crowd was on hand for the always-festive Senior Night. The seniors were playing their last home game on the Herkimer hardwood and were given special recognition prior to the game. A pictorial Senior Night story will be posted on this website later today.

The contest got under way with a lot of good defensive play by both sides. Both the Generals and the Vikings made several steals and were rebounding well in their defensive ends. Demetrius Mitchell put Herkimer's first points on the board. Mitchell would go on to lead the scoring with a 17-point night.

The Generals then went on a scoring run. Floyd hit for three, Mike Thomas put in a field goal, and Steve Whittingham nailed a three. 21-12 Herkimer.

Hudson Valley responded with two three-pointers and kept the score close, at 21-18. The game saw 23 three-pointers – 11 by the Generals and 12 by the Vikings.

Feiler netted a three-point play, followed by a Viking two. Herkimer led by three points. Then Mike Thomas sank two threes. The half ended with the home team ahead 32-26.

The second 20 minutes began with another Mitchell three and a breakaway tally by Dequan Jefferson. Feiler sank two free throws and Herkimer led by 13, at 39-26. But Hudson Valley played a determined game. They kept narrowing the gap and got within five points with a bit over a minute left. Mitchell shot from beyond the arc. His shot rimmed out, but Thomas was there to put it back for two points. Herkimer led by seven, then closed out the game for a 63-55 win.

Head Coach Matt Lee had praise for both teams. When asked about the key to the game, Lee said, "Timely shots. We scored when we needed a basket. We never got easy baskets tonight, but we scored when we needed to." Lee added, "Hudson Valley did a great job of controlling the tempo of the game."

The 26-3 Generals will finish the regular season at Schenectady CCC on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. tipoff. They will then prep for the Region 3 championship tournament which will be played March 1-3 in Delhi. The Generals may well be the #1 seed, but that remains to be seen. This website will post the seedings as soon as they become available.
