Herkimer Cross Country turns in strong showing at SUNY-Poly Invite
MARCY, NY – A second go-round at SUNY Poly saw the Herkimer College Generals cross-country teams throw down their best performances of the season to date at the 6th Annual Wildcat Weekend Classic.
The Lady Generals, albeit they were the last of the 5 complete teams in the field, did not lose to a junior college program on this day. They were led by Isabel Van Tassel (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, NY) and Jenna-Marie LaPerla (Mount Markham/Ilion, NY) in 25th and 26th, respectively. Their respective times of 31:41.1 and 32:10.8 put them 2nd and 3rd amongst junior college runners in the field.
Rounding out the women’s team were Malerie Belles (Cicero-North Syracuse/Clay, NY), Claire Connolly (Little Falls/Little Falls, NY), Liberty Zamarripas (Travis/Austin, TX) and Amina Mohamed (Bayview South/Milwaukee, WI). Belles ran 33rd (34:19.6), Connolly took home 34th (35:06.6), Zamarripas grabbed 38th (39:22.2) and Mohamed rounded out the Herkimer pack with a 39th place performance (39:22.2).
The men on the other hand, turned in one of the best performances in the history of the program, finishing 2nd to host school SUNY Poly, which swept the top 7 places impressively. With only 74 points scored, they beat some talented NCAA Division 3 programs. More importantly, however, they scored their first victory over archrival Mohawk Valley in a very long time.
Three Herkimer Generals earned spots in the top 20 as individuals. They were Jake Baisley (Dolgeville/Dolgeville, NY), Zumar Smith (Amelia Academy/Chesterfield, VA) and Andrew Yacobucci (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, NY). Baisley, the reigning Mountain Valley Conference champion, opened his sophomore campaign by cruising in to a 12th place individual finish. His time of 30:05.0 was the best amongst NJCAA competitors. Smith was not far behind in 15th (30:51.3) and Yacobucci used a late surge to hang on for 20th place (31:37.2).
Also competing for the Generals were Lewis Lewis (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY), Kennyasha Joseph (Dover/Dover Plains, NY), Marius Murabito (Whitesboro/Whitesboro, NY), Jordan Edmonds (Bridgeport Aerospace and Business/Bridgeport, CT), Ricky Patterson (Peekskill/Peekskill, NY), George Watson II (Herkimer/Herkimer, NY), Kyler Ford (Herkimer/Herkimer, NY), Justin Jones (Central Valley/Ilion, NY) and James Briody (Cairo-Durham/Cairo, NY). Lewis ran in 27th (32:46.2), Joseph was 29th (33:06.7), Murabito followed in 30th (33:10.6), Edmonds came home in 38th (34:22.7), Patterson held on for 40th (34:33.5), Watson finished up in 45th (35:51.4), Ford powered through to 48th (36:55.6), Jones cruised in to 55th (41:52.9) and Briody closed out the Herkimer pack in 59th (46:32.3).
Herkimer will be back in action next Saturday (9/29), with another chance to make a statement. They will be hosting their own invitational in what could be a preview of the conference championships later in the season.
