Herkimer Cross Country hosts FM and Hudson Valley
HERKIMER, NY – Absent runners, illness and some fatigued runners all were contributing factors to what was an otherwise dismal day against rival Hudson Valley Community College, who defeated both the men’s and women’s cross country teams for the titles at the 3rd Annual Herkimer College Invitational this past Saturday (9/29).
The women, despite a valiant effort that produced several season’s best performances, proved no match against the rival Vikings, falling on the short end of a 15-40 decision. They were led by a 6th place finish from Isabel Van Tassel (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, NY), who completed the 3.1 mile course in a time of 27:20.
The Lady Generals also had the next four spots behind Van Tassel, occupied by Claire Connolly (Little Falls/Little Falls, NY), Malerie Belles (Cicero-North Syracuse/Clay, NY), Amina Mohamed (Bayview South/Milwaukee, WI) and Liberty Zamaparrias (Travis/Austin, TX). Connolly dropped a major season’s best to get 7th (28:10), Belles ran to form to secure 8th (29:58), and both Mohamed (33:02) and Zamaparrias (33:11) delivered significant season bests, albeit in a losing effort.
The men’s team did not fare much better, as Hudson Valley demonstrated why they are the top ranked team in the region, besting the Generals 16-45. Hudson Valley’s Jared Craw won the individual title with a time of 22:57, which is the 10th fastest time in course history.
With top runner Jake Baisley (Dolgeville/Dolgeville, NY) unable to run effectively (he only ran 27:11 to place 12th, which is well off his usual pace), the task of leading the charge was left to Andrew Yacobucci (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, NY), the top placing General in Herkimer’s first two meets this year. Yacobucci took home 5th place individually, completing the 4-mile course in a time of 24:51.
The other General competitors were Zumar Smith (Amelia Academy/Chesterfield, VA), Marius Murabito (Whitesboro/Whitesboro, NY), Kennyasha Joseph (Dover/Dover Plains, NY), Lewis Lewis (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY), Jordan Edmonds (Bridgeport Aerospace and Business/Bridgeport, CT), Ricky Patterson (Peekskill/Peekskill, NY), Kyler Ford (Herkimer/Herkimer, NY), Justin Jones (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY) and James Briody (Cairo-Durham/Cairo, NY). Smith got 8th (25:22), Murabito took 13th (27:31), the trio of Joseph, Lewis, Edmonds took spots 17, 18 and 19 (all with times of 28:55), Patterson was 20th (28:57), Ford cruised home in 23rd (32:12), Jones finished strongly to get 25th (36:38) and Briody rounded out the pack in 26th (44:26).
The Generals are back in action on Wednesday (10/3) to compete in the SUNY Delhi Bronco Cross Country Classic.
