Generals host Mountain Valley Conference Championships
HERKIMER, NY – Home field advantage proved beneficial to the Herkimer College Generals cross-country teams, as they officially kicked off their postseason with a solid performance at the Mountain Valley Conference Championship Meet this past Saturday (10/20).
Hudson Valley swept the team and individual titles impressively. The Viking women had the only complete team in the women’s field and were led by individual champion Mercedes Plavansky’s time of 21:02.6, the 6th fastest time in course history.
The Lady Generals on the other hand, albeit incomplete, had rookie Jenna La Perla (Mount Markham/Ilion, NY) wind up earning All-Conference Honors with her 7th place finish, covering the 5 kilometer course in a time of 25:39.7. This is by far her highest placing finish on the season.
The other finishers for the ladies, were Claire Connolly (Little Falls/Little Falls, NY), Amina Mohamed (Bayview South/Milwaukee, WI) and Malerie Belles (Cicero-North Syracuse/Clay, NY). They occupied spots 10 through 12 individually in a field of 14 runners. Connolly came through in 27:46.3, with Mohamed blasting a huge season’s best of 28:28.9 and Belles clocking a 29:54.5 to round out the General offensive.
Hudson Valley was an impressive winner as well, beating out Herkimer and Mohawk Valley, 25-49-54. They were led by individual winner Jared Craw’s time of 22:44.2, which makes him the 8th fastest runner in course history.
Last year’s champion Jake Baisley (Dolgeville/Dolgeville, NY) has struggled this year, but wound up retaining all-conference honors with a 7th place finish in one of his better performances of the season. His time of 24:09.1 made him the top finisher on the day for the General men.
Also competing for the runner-up General men were Andrew Yacobucci (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, NY), Zumar Smith (Amelia Academy/Chesterfield, VA), Lewis Lewis (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY), Ricky Patterson (Peekskill/Peekskill, NY), Marius Murabito (Whitesboro/Whitesboro, NY), Jordan Edmonds (Bridgeport Aerospace and Business/Bridgeport, CT), Kennyasha Joseph (Dover/Dover Plains, NY), George Watson (Herkimer/Herkimer, NY), Kyler Ford (Herkimer/Herkimer, NY) and Justin Jones (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY). Yacobucci finished 9th (24:38.4), Smith grabbed 10th (25:04.9), Lewis was 12th (25:30.8), Patterson ran to 17th (26:05.3), Murabito powered home to 19th (26:43.9), Edmonds clinched 21st (26:57.0), Joseph charged home in (27:13.2) with Watson right behind in 25th (27:19.8), improving Ford ran a very solid race to get 26th (27:27.8) and Jones rounded out the field of 32 competitors with a time of 35:49.2.
Herkimer will travel to Thomas R. Proctor Park this Saturday (10/27) to compete in the Region 3 Championship Meet hosted by Mohawk Valley Community College
