Herkimer Cross Country opens 2019 season at SUNY POLY Invitational
MARCY, NY – A new season has dawned in the cross-country ranks and the Herkimer Generals traveled to SUNY Poly for their 13th annual short course invitational looking to make a statement or two.
There was not much to look to on the women’s side, as they only had one finisher. However, that finish was a very good performance from Alyssa Jones (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY). While the 93rd place finish and the time of 23:55.7 for the 4,000 meter course may not seem overly impressive, she wound up being the #4 junior collegiate finisher in the field. This also marked her first cross-country race in almost two years after taking the previous year off to focus on academics.
The men’s team, on the other hand, had a full squad and were looking to make an early impression. That they did, as they took home an 8th place finish in a field of 12 complete teams. That was good enough to earn them the honor of top junior collegiate team, as they scored a 16 point victory over reigning Region 3 Champion Hudson Valley (245-261).
Leading the way for the Herkimer men was freshman Wakeem Medina (Schenectady/Schenectady, NY). Medina in his first race for the Generals was the top junior collegiate runner in the field, taking 32nd place individually. His time of 22:05.5 for the 6,000 meter course is indicative of a very promising start to the season.
In support of Medina were Lewis Lewis (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY), Andrew Yacobucci (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, NY), Christopher Hardin (Rome Free Academy/Rome, NY), Michael Colombo (Pawling/Pawling, NY) and William Crews (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY). Lewis was 43rd (22:34.1), Yacobucci 49th (22:48.3), Hardin 71st (23:35.4), Colombo 112th (27:46.8) and Crews in 119th rounding off the Herkimer squad (in 29:36.7).
Herkimer returns to action next Saturday (9/7) for the Bruce Bridgeman Invitational hosted by Finger Lakes Community College.
