Herkimer Men finish 3rd, Women finish 4th at Region III Championships
CANANDAIGUA, NY – The Herkimer Generals continued their impressive season this past Saturday (10/28) at the Region III Championship Meet hosted by Finger Lakes Community College, and though the Generals had another big effort, they wound up coming up just short of another historic first.
For the women, Hudson Valley’s Ryan McKenzie captured the individual championship with a time of 22:12.2, finishing just 0.7 seconds ahead of Mohawk Valley’s Brynne Myers in a rematch of the Mountain Valley Conference Championship Meet. Hudson Valley, the reigning Region 3 champs however, wound up being beaten for the title by Corning, 37-42.
The Herkimer women wound up taking a 4th place finish, scoring 95 points in a valiant effort against a group of extremely powerful teams. They were led once again by Alyssa Jones (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY) who completed the 5,000 meter course in a time of 28:55.28, good for 22nd place.
Also competing for the Lady Generals were Ellia Dannible (Cobleskill-Richmondville/Warnersville, NY) who finished 29th (30:36.65), Lauren Horowitz (Washingtonville/Washingtonville, NY) who captured 31st (30:45.47), Gianna Durso (Notre Dame/Utica, NY) who placed 36th (37:41.75) and Alizee Embry (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY) rounding out the effort in 37th (40:15.36).
The men’s race was one of the most competitive competitions in recent memory which Broome and Hudson Valley tied in score at 65, with Broome getting the win on a dual-meet score tie-breaker, 24-31. Fulton-Montgomery’s Sebastian Mills pulled off what many considered to be an upset win, by edging Finger Lakes’ Hunter Brignall by just over half a second, with the winning time being 27:10.51 for the 8,000 meter course.
Herkimer ran a great race to place 3rd, despite an off race by a key run, a heartbreaking fact given what could have been (they finished only 2 points behind the top two). Considering the big picture of the season and the fact that said runner has been dealing with an Achilles problem for most of the season, the Generals have nothing to hang their head over, as they have cemented themselves as one of the very best teams in program history.
Herkimer came away with two Region III All-Stars this year. They were 5th place finisher Wakeem Medina (Schenectady/Schenectady, NY; time of 29:15.48) and 10th place finisher Lewis Lewis (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY; 29:45.78). Also competing for the Generals were Christopher Hardin (Rome Free Academy/Rome, NY) in 17th (30:42.61), Andrew Yacobucci (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, NY) in 20th (30:59.1), Nick Kennedy (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY) in 22nd (31:13.77), William Crews (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY) in 39th (35:12.76), and James Briody (Cairo-Durham/Cairo, NY) in 57th (41:34.01).
Herkimer will conclude what has been an epic season this coming Saturday (11/2), as they will travel to Holyoke Community College for the NJCAA Division III National Championships.
