Herkimer Men win Mountain Valley Cross Country Championship
HERKIMER, NY – History was made just a short walk away from Wehrum Stadium this past Saturday (10/19), as the Herkimer College men’s and women’s cross-country teams continued their excellent seasons at the Mountain Valley Conference Championships.
On the women’s side of the coin, Hudson Valley had the only complete team in the field, winning the championship by default for the 2nd straight year. They also had the individual winner for the 2nd straight year as well, as McKenzie Ryan completed the 5,000 meter course in a time of 21:09.7, more than 15 seconds ahead of Mohawk Valley’s Brynne Myers, to win the conference title.
In terms of the lady Generals, they had Alyssa Jones (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY) once again at the helm. Her time of 29:14.3 was good for a 10th place finish. In support were Ellia Dannible (Cobleskill-Richmondville/Warnersville, NY) in 11th, Lauren Horowitz (Washingtonville/Washingtonville, NY) in 13th and Gianna Durso (Notre Dame/Utica, NY) in 17th. They had respective times of 29:53.6, 30:00.1 and 38:42.4.
The history was made on the men’s side, where by a 1-point margin, the Herkimer Generals captured their first conference title in program history. They defeated reigning champion Hudson Valley, 27-28 on their home course to finally come through after so many years of coming up just short.
History was nearly made in the individual race as well, as Fulton-Montgomery’s Sebastian Mills came just 0.5 seconds short of breaking the course record of 22:12.6 set in 2016 by SUNY Adirondack’s Jason Linendoll. His effort was plenty to win the individual title, finishing nearly 75 seconds ahead of 2nd place in one of the more dominating performances in meet history.
For the Generals, they were once again led by Wakeem Medina (Schenectady/Schenectady, NY). His time of 23:48.8 for the 4-mile course was good for 3rd place and a spot on the Mountain Valley All-Conference Team. Joining him on the All-Conference Team were Andrew Yacobucci (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, NY) in 4th place (24:00.3) and Lewis Lewis (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY) in 7th (24:29.8).
Completing the effort for the Generals were Christopher Hardin (Rome Free Academy/Rome, NY), Nick Kennedy (Central Valley Academy/Ilion, NY), William Crews (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica, NY) and James Briody (Cairo-Durham/Cairo, NY). The performances by Hardin (10th place, time of 25:24.5), Kennedy (14th, 26:35.0), Crews (16th, 28:14.4) and Briody (22nd, 33:03.1) were key in Herkimer’s history-making triumph.
Herkimer will turn their sights to the Region III Championship Meet, to be hosted by Finger Lakes Community College this coming Saturday (10/26), with a scheduled start time of 10 AM.
