Campanian NJCAA Region III Champion

DELHI, NY – After a successful conference meet, the Herkimer Generals cross country program continued that momentum at the Region III Championship at SUNY Delhi Saturday (10/25). The men finished fifth overall and the women finished third overall.

Taking top honors for the men was Captain Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY). The sophomore finished in 15th place for the Generals, coming seconds away from making it to the All-Region team. Behind him was teammates Daniel Thomas (Coton, UK), Jace LaPuma (Little Falls, NY), Gregory Ashe (Watertown, NY), Philip Tanner (Deposit, NY), Josh Paoni (Herkimer, NY) and Divontay Huggins (Brooklyn, NY). Thomas finished 25th (31:13.2), LaPuma finished 27th (31:26.0), Ashe finished 36th (32:58.3), Tanner finished 39th (33:14.2), Paoni finished 48th (36:57.8) and Huggins finished 49th (38:26.9). Tanner was the only runner to better his place and time from last season. He finished six places higher and over two minutes faster than his results from 2013.

As for the women, Captain Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY) captured her second consecutive Region III Championship, finishing in first place for the a consecutive week, accumulating four first-place finishes in her last four races. The sophomore posted a 19:17.1 which was 33 seconds better than the next finisher.

Joining Campanian on the All-Region Team was Haruka Murakami (Ibaraki, Japan). The sophomore finished in 10th place, posting a 21:39. After Murakami, the Generals had Tianderah Twichell (West Winfield, NY), Sharon E. Howell (Ilion, NY), Alicia Burnett (Inlet, NY), Olivia Lazarus (South New Berlin, NY) and Jessica Inserra (Yorkville, NY) compete. Twichell finished 16th (22:53.0), Howell finished 22nd (23:51.7, Burnett finished 27th (26:08.3) Lazarus finished 29th (26:32.8) and Inserra finished 33rd (28:23.3). Twichell and Burnett were the only two runners from last season to improve their times from 2013. Twichell finished over a minute better (24:10) and Burnett finished two seconds better (26:06).

The cross country program gets back at it in their final meet of the season at Finger Lakes Community College, this year’s host for the NJCAA Cross Country National Championship. Campanian will be the only runner looking to get the trifecta; winning conference, regional and national races. The sophomore finished in first at both conference and regional meets in 2013, coming six spots away from first at nationals. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
