Men’s Lacrosse plays well but loses at West Point

West Point, NY – The Herkimer men's lacrosse team opened their 2013 season with a well-played 16-11 loss to a slightly older and more experienced United States Military Academy Preparatory School team on Saturday afternoon. Seniors Berek Martichuski and Jace Sowden each scored three goals for the Generals.

The conditions were very good for playing lacrosse. The weather was quite cool under cloudy skies, but there was little wind and the footing was excellent. The field was lacrosse-specific, and the artificial turf was the same type as in the Generals' home stadium.

MLAX 3 02 2013 Jace SowdenPete Duggan took the opening faceoff for the Generals, and the game was under way. In less than three minutes, the Generals had the lead. Joe Lopopolo took a pass from Martichuski and scored from close in. Just 16 seconds later, Sowden fed Martichuski, and the crafty senior faked and scored. 2-0 Herkimer. Then the Black Knights' offense came to life.

Army scored a shorthanded goal from 15 yards out, and then scored when a Black Knight curled around the goal. 2-2. Army was assessed a penalty, and seconds later Snowdon tallied. Herkimer led 3-2, but it would be their last lead of the afternoon.

The Generals played a good game. They moved the ball very well at times and showed some good team depth. Seniors Ryan Revette and Joe Lopopolo scored two goals apiece. Freshman Kamm David tallied in his first collegiate game. Lopopolo almost netted a third when he was knocked to the ground six yards from the goal and got off a good shot just before he hit the ground, but the Army goalie stopped the ball.

Herkimer's next game will be a challenge. They travel to Batavia on Wednesday to play the defending regional runners-up, Genesee. The Herkimer Ten will open their home season next Saturday, hosting Finger Lakes.
