Men’s Lacrosse defeats nationally ranked Broncos at home

(Herkimer's Kyle Lee scores from an assist by Nashwan Hoffman to lead SUNY Delhi 3-0).

(Kyle Lee finished Wednesday's game with four goals and one assist).

HERKIMER, NY – Facing their first ranked opponent of the season at home on Wednesday (4/1) didn’t faze the Herkimer Generals men’s lacrosse team, defeating the #7 Broncos 10-6 for their fourth consecutive victory.

Herkimer (4-1) came out focused in the first half, outscoring SUNY Delhi 8-0 by intermission. Leading the attack was Jeremy Mowrey (Johnstown, NY), Kyle Lee (Cincinnati, OH) and Ryan Fischer (Monroe, NY). Mowrey took advantage of a couple groundballs which slipped past the Bronco defense to net two unassisted goals with 8:41 left in the first quarter, both 1-v-1 with the goalie, giving Herkimer the 2-0 lead.

Netting the next four goals for the Generals was Lee. His first was assisted by teammate Nashwan Hoffman (Kingston, NY) on a fast break, second came with four seconds left in the first unassisted, third came on an assist from Mowrey with the team ‘man up’ and fourth came after Lee stole a SUNY Delhi pass behind the goalie, then netted it for the 6-0 lead with 11:12 left in the half.

Rounding out the first half scoring was Fischer. The freshman scored on assists from both Lee and Jon Wilkins (Norwlak, CT) to make it 8-0, giving Fischer nine goals on the season.

In the second half, Herkimer was outscored 6-to-2, relying heavily on goalie Austin Loeffel (Red Hook, NY) to come through for the win. And Loeffel did just that, saving 28 shots, the second time this season the sophomore has saved over 20 in one game. Currently Loeffel is second in the nation in goals allowed (20), save percentage (77.3) and third in goals against average (6.06).

Supplying both goals for Herkimer in the second half were Mowrey and Isaac Miranda (Norwalk, CT). Mowrey’s third goal of the game gave Herkimer a 9-2 lead and Miranda’s lone goal put it at 10-4. It was Mowrey’s team leading 14th goal and Miranda’s seventh goal of the season.

Up next for the Generals is Jefferson Community College. The Cannoneers are 0-3 and ranked 12th in the region, netting only 11 goals thus far into the season. Herkimer averages 12.75 goals per game which is currently ninth in the nation. They’ll look for the offense to continue that in their second consecutive home game this Saturday, April 4th. Game time at Wehrum Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
