Fischer nets five for Generals fifth consecutive win

HERKIMER, NY – Allowing an average of six goals per game at home this season, the Herkimer Generals men’s lacrosse team only allowed five on Saturday (4/4) at Wehrum Stadium to defeat Jefferson Community College 14-5 at home.
Herkimer (5-1, 2-0) led the entire contest, seeing Ryan Fischer (Monroe, NY) net his first goal of the game on an assist from Kyle Lee (Cincinnati, OH). The Cannoneers briefly tied it at 1-1 until Herkimer ripped off six goals into the second period for the 7-1 lead. Five different Generals scored during the run, all of them assisted, until Jefferson scored with 6:44 left in the first half to make it 7-2.
Sophomore Jeremy Mowrey (Johnstown, NY) scored the final goal of the first half with eight seconds left on Cristian Ojeda’s (Ossining, NY) second assist of the quarter, giving Herkimer an 8-2 lead at intermission. Mowrey finished with three goals and one assist, while Ojeda finished with two goals and two assists.
The second half again belonged to Fisher, netting two more unanswered goals in the first two minutes of the third to tally his fifth goal with over 28 minutes left in regulation. It helped the freshman to a career-high five goals, assisting on three of the team’s final four goals to end up with four assists too which his career-high as a General also.
Jefferson did manage to outscore Herkimer in the final quarter 3-2, thanks to two goals in the final two minutes with Mario Diaz (New Rochelle, NY) in goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Generals outscored the Cannoneers 10-to-3 in the first 45 minutes of play.
Getting the start again at goalie was Austin Loeffel (Red Hook, NY). The sophomore saved five shots, but only allowed two goals 45 minutes, three below his season average per game for his fifth win of the season.
Up next for Herkimer is Hudson Valley who is currently 1-4 overall. The Vikings will host the second best team in the region on Wednesday, April 8th before Herkimer plays their final two home games of the season. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
